Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Delivers Opening Remarks at the Public-Private Forum on Circular Economy

On 10 July 2026, H.E. Mr. Sarun Charoensuwan, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Thailand, delivered the opening remarks at the public-private forum titled “From Europe to Thailand: Best Practices and Partnerships for Sustainable Packaging Solutions.” The event brought together representatives from the public and private sectors to strengthen Thailand’s readiness in responding to the European Union’s evolving circular economy policies, particularly the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which is scheduled to enter into force on 12 August 2026.
The forum was also attended by Mr. Werapong Prapha, Thai Trade Representative, and Ms. Renita Bhaskar, Minister Counsellor and Head of Trade and Economic Affairs of the Delegation of the European Union to Thailand, alongside representatives from government agencies, industry, and academia.
In his remarks, the Vice Minister highlighted that while the PPWR presents new compliance requirements for businesses, it also creates significant opportunities for Thai industries to enhance their competitiveness and expand access to international markets. He emphasized that adapting to the new regulation will accelerate Thailand’s transition towards a circular economy, strengthen the country’s position as a trusted and high-value partner in global value chains, and foster long-term sustainable economic growth.
The Vice Minister reaffirmed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ commitment to supporting Thai businesses and industries in preparing for and complying with the new EU regulatory framework. He noted that aligning with PPWR standards would contribute to strengthening Thailand’s sustainable manufacturing and export sectors, while also demonstrating the country’s readiness for OECD accession and its commitment to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The forum served as a valuable platform for dialogue and knowledge sharing among stakeholders from both Thailand and Europe. Participants exchanged perspectives on policy developments, discussed best practices, and explored opportunities for collaboration to advance sustainable packaging solutions.
Representatives from leading companies and industry organisations—including SCG Chemicals, Danone Specialized Nutrition, CPF, and the Plastics Institute—shared practical experiences in developing innovative packaging, improving resource efficiency, and preparing businesses to meet evolving international sustainability standards.
The event underscored Thailand’s commitment to working closely with European partners and the private sector to promote a more sustainable, resilient, and competitive economy, while ensuring that Thai businesses are well positioned to meet emerging global environmental requirements and seize new opportunities in the green economy.
