Brazil has announced its strong support for the candidacy of Mr. Fabio de Sá e Silva, a renowned expert in human rights and democratic governance, to serve on the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) for the 2026–2029 term.
On May 5, 2025, at an event held at the Itamaraty Palace, Brazilian officials formally presented Mr. Sá e Silva’s candidacy to the IACHR. With his extensive experience in public sector reform and academic background, Mr. Sá e Silva is well-equipped to make a substantial contribution to the Commission’s work. As a holder of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Law and a PhD in Law, Politics and Society, he possesses a deep understanding of human rights issues and has worked on designing and implementing institutional reforms in various fields.
Mr. Sá e Silva’s academic and professional experience spans several prominent institutions, including the Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea), the University of Oklahoma, the Center on the Legal Profession at Harvard Law School, and international organizations such as the IACHR itself. His appointment to the Commission is a testament to Brazil’s commitment to promoting human rights and democratic governance throughout the Americas.
Brazil has every confidence that Mr. Sá e Silva will foster constructive dialogue and cooperation within the Inter-American Human Rights System, furthering the cause of human rights in the region. The election will take place during the 55th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), to be held in Antigua and Barbuda from May 25-27, 2025.
