The U.S. Mission to the Organization of American States (OAS) has announced its partnership with the OAS Executive Secretariat for Integral Development to launch a new project titled “Developing an Artificial Intelligence Policy Framework for the Americas.” The initiative was unveiled during a special ceremony on December 12, 2024, at the OAS VII Meeting of Ministers and High-Level Authorities of Science and Technology.
The project, supported by over $1.1 million in U.S. government funding, aims to promote the development of safe, secure, and trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) policy frameworks across the Western Hemisphere. The OAS Executive Secretariat for Integral Development will lead the initiative, bringing together decision-makers from governments, the private sector, and academia throughout the Americas.
The initiative will focus on several key areas:
- Policy and Institutional Frameworks: Establishing policies for the responsible development and use of AI.
- Good Practices and Key Actions: Identifying successful practices and regulatory actions for AI deployment, risk mitigation, and positive impact amplification.
- AI Standards Development: Supporting the creation and implementation of AI standards.
- Multisectoral Collaboration: Exploring opportunities for collaboration among OAS Member States and other stakeholders.
- Skills Building and Training: Promoting education and certification programs on AI.
This new initiative highlights the U.S.’s ongoing commitment to fostering innovation, ensuring responsible AI practices, and strengthening regional cooperation to build a robust AI framework that benefits citizens across the Americas.
