A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Vanuatu on December 17, 2024, centered just 30 kilometers west of Port Vila, the country’s capital. The earthquake, followed by several aftershocks, has caused widespread damage across the island nation, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

The Government of the Republic of Indonesia has expressed its deepest sympathies and condolences to the Government and people of Vanuatu. “Our prayers are with the victims and their families, especially those still unaccounted for. We hope for their safety, and we stand in solidarity with the people of Vanuatu during this difficult time,” said an official statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Indonesia has committed to closely monitoring the situation and is coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure the safety of its citizens in Vanuatu. The Indonesian government has also pledged to provide any necessary assistance as part of its humanitarian support.
