State Visit of President Tharman Shanmugaratnam of Singapore to India

H.E. Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of the Republic of Singapore, is on a State Visit to India from January 14 to 18, 2025. Accompanied by his spouse, Mrs. Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, and a high-level delegation including Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Finance Mr. Chee Hong Tat, Senior Minister of State Ms. Sim Ann, Members of Parliament, and senior officials, this marks President Tharman’s first State Visit to India since assuming office.

The visit commenced with a warm reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where Hon’ble President Smt. Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi welcomed President Tharman with a Ceremonial Guard of Honour. President Tharman also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat, reflecting the shared commitment of both nations to peace and non-violence.

During the visit, President Tharman held comprehensive discussions with President Droupadi Murmu, who hosted a state banquet in his honour. Together, they unveiled a special joint logo commemorating 60 years of India-Singapore diplomatic relations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also engaged in extensive discussions with President Tharman, focusing on advancing the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The leaders exchanged views on regional and global challenges, reinforcing their shared vision for peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, along with several key Cabinet Ministers, including Shri Nitin Gadkari, Shri Piyush Goyal, and Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, called on President Tharman to explore avenues for deepening collaboration across sectors such as infrastructure, health, finance, and technology.

This State Visit coincides with the commencement of celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between India and Singapore. Over the decades, this relationship has grown into a robust and multifaceted partnership, with Singapore serving as a cornerstone of India’s Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific strategy.

On January 17 and 18, President Tharman will visit Odisha to further explore opportunities for cooperation at the state level.

This visit builds on the momentum from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Singapore in September 2024, during which India-Singapore relations were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. As the two nations celebrate this milestone year, the State Visit underscores the commitment of both countries to strengthening their ties for mutual prosperity and regional stability.
