India-Indonesia Ties Highlighted During President Subianto’s State Visit

President Droupadi Murmu warmly welcomed His Excellency Mr. Prabowo Subianto, President of the Republic of Indonesia, at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 25, 2025. This marked President Subianto’s first State Visit to India, and his presence as the Chief Guest for the 75th Republic Day celebrations underscored the enduring relationship between the two nations. A formal banquet was also hosted in his honor.

During her address, President Murmu emphasized the deep civilizational ties between India and Indonesia, which span thousands of years. She remarked, “Our shared values of pluralism, inclusiveness, and adherence to the rule of law have been the foundation of our contemporary relations.”

A Historic Bond
President Murmu highlighted the historic significance of this occasion, noting that 75 years ago, President Sukarno of Indonesia was the Chief Guest at India’s first Republic Day in 1950. She said, “President Subianto’s presence this year is a testament to our long-standing ties and the shared democratic traditions of our nations.”

The President also recalled India’s millennia-old cultural and trade connections with Indonesia, referencing the ‘Bali Jatra’ festival in Odisha, which commemorates ancient maritime trade routes between India and Bali and other parts of the Indo-Pacific.

Expanding Bilateral Cooperation
Speaking on contemporary relations, President Murmu pointed out the significant potential for India and Indonesia to expand trade and investment due to their shared economic structures and geographical proximity. She also highlighted the growing importance of defence and space cooperation as key pillars of their partnership.

“Indonesia is a crucial component of India’s ‘Act East’ policy and Indo-Pacific vision,” President Murmu stated, adding that the two countries are increasingly collaborating on multilateral platforms such as the G-20 and ASEAN. She congratulated Indonesia on its recent induction as a permanent member of BRICS, further solidifying its role on the global stage.

Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
Both leaders agreed that India and Indonesia, as Comprehensive Strategic Partners, are expanding their cooperation into new and promising areas. With vast emerging markets and shared regional interests, this partnership is set to deepen further following President Subianto’s visit.

President Murmu reiterated India’s commitment to fostering strong ties with Indonesia, describing it as a cornerstone of India’s engagement in the Indo-Pacific region and an essential partner in advancing the shared goals of the Global South.
