Inaugural India-Philippines Maritime Dialogue Held in Manila

The inaugural India-Philippines Maritime Dialogue took place on December 13, 2024, in Manila, marking a significant step in the strengthening of maritime cooperation between the two nations. The Indian delegation was led by Ms. Muanpuii Saiawi, Joint Secretary for Disarmament and International Security Affairs at the Ministry of External Affairs, while the Philippines delegation was headed by Mr. Marshall Louis Alferez, Assistant Secretary for the Maritime and Ocean Affairs Office of the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The dialogue took place during the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and the Philippines. Both sides exchanged perspectives on prevailing maritime challenges and discussed ways to enhance cooperation for mutual growth and global well-being. A key focus was the importance of adhering to a rules-based maritime order, particularly under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and exploring ways to promote this framework through collaborative initiatives.

The two delegations discussed a range of cooperation initiatives, including maritime industry development, marine scientific research, the ocean economy, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), as well as enhancing Navy and Coast Guard cooperation and maritime law enforcement. They also agreed to share best practices and work together on maritime capacity-building efforts.

The next round of the India-Philippines Maritime Dialogue is set to be held in New Delhi in 2025, further solidifying the growing maritime partnership between the two countries.
