In a significant step forward for Thai foreign policy, H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended the opening ceremony of the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting (MCM) 2025, held under the theme “Leading the way toward resilient, inclusive, and sustainable prosperity through rules-based trade, investment and innovation” at the OECD Conference Centre in Paris, France.
On June 3, 2025, this marked a notable milestone for Thailand as an OECD Accession Country, with the Minister scheduled to engage in discussions with high-level representatives from over 55 countries and international organizations. Key policy topics included the economic situation in OECD countries, international trade policy, inclusive and sustainable development, OECD membership expansion, digital economy development, and artificial intelligence (AI) governance.
During his participation, the Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of strengthening Thai micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises' (MSMEs') involvement in regional and global value chains. He also highlighted Thailand's commitment to improving access to financing for green transition investments and international cooperation on these issues.
Thailand's aspiration to become a full member of the OECD by 2030 was reaffirmed during the meeting, with a focus on fostering inclusive and sustainable economic growth. The Minister stressed the need for promoting high-quality and sustainable investment, as well as combating corruption. To this end, Thailand plans to initiate the process of becoming a party to the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention.
The event's co-chairmanship was also transferred from Australia and Vietnam to Canada and the Philippines, underscoring the significance of these countries in Southeast Asia and their potential roles in regional cooperation.
Thailand's active participation in the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting demonstrates its commitment to engaging with international organizations on key global issues. By fostering strong ties with like-minded nations and promoting sustainable development, Thailand seeks to secure its position as a responsible player in regional and global affairs.
The significance of this event lies in Thailand's increasing role in shaping international economic policies. As an OECD Accession Country, the country is poised to take advantage of opportunities for cooperation and knowledge-sharing with other nations. With its strong emphasis on sustainable development and inclusive growth, Thailand can make a meaningful contribution to addressing pressing global challenges.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' efforts to engage with international organizations underscored its dedication to promoting Thai interests abroad while contributing to the betterment of regional and global affairs.
In conclusion, Thailand's participation in the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting 2025 highlights the country's growing influence on the global stage.
