External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar's visit to the Federal Republic of Germany from May 22-24, 2025, marked a significant milestone in India-Germany relations. The high-level diplomatic engagement within the month of the new government formation in Germany underscored both sides' commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
During his three-day visit, Dr. Jaishankar met with Chancellor Friedrich Merz, holding comprehensive talks with his counterpart, Mr. Johann Wadephul, Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany. The two leaders discussed ways to deepen their strategic partnership across diverse sectors, including defence, digital technologies, AI, green and sustainable development, and talent mobility.
Dr. Jaishankar also conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to Chancellor Merz and expressed appreciation for the German government's expression of solidarity and support to India in the fight against terrorism. In response, Chancellor Merz reaffirmed his strong support for furthering the India-Germany Strategic Partnership across various sectors.
The EAM also held extensive discussions with Foreign Minister Mr. Johann Wadephul, covering a broad range of bilateral cooperation areas. Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to expanding collaboration in key strategic areas and exchanging perspectives on regional and global developments.
Dr. Jaishankar's meeting with Dr. Günter Sautter, Foreign and Security Policy Advisor to the Federal Chancellor, focused on strengthening strategic, defence, and security cooperation, including cyber security, Indo-Pacific, and defence industrial collaboration. The EAM also interacted with Parliamentarians from across the political spectrum, advancing political dialogue and strengthening economic and technological cooperation.
Additionally, Dr. Jaishankar participated in a high-level Think Tank dialogue at the DGAP (German Council on Foreign Relations), engaging with thought leaders and experts to promote global security and stability. The EAM also chaired the regional HOMs Conference, which brought together India's Ambassadors/High Commissioners in European countries.
The visit to Germany, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the Strategic Partnership, led to renewed engagement between the two nations, injecting fresh momentum into their partnership. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening political, economic, technological, and people-to-people ties between India and Germany.
