In celebration of Grenada’s 51st Independence Day, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended warm congratulations to the people of Grenada, reaffirming the United States’ commitment to deepening diplomatic and security cooperation with the island nation.
In a formal statement, Secretary Rubio highlighted Grenada’s vital role in addressing transnational threats such as drug trafficking and illegal migration. He emphasized that ongoing collaboration under the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI) has been instrumental in countering organized crime and enhancing regional stability.
“Grenada’s dedication to combating transnational threats remains critical to regional security. Through our partnership under the CBSI, we are working together to dismantle criminal networks that threaten economic progress and the safety of our people,” said Secretary Rubio.
Strengthening Regional Security & Sovereignty
The United States underscored its commitment to defending democratic values and protecting national sovereignty in the region. Secretary Rubio pointed to growing concerns over foreign influence, particularly from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), whose economic and political strategies have raised alarms among U.S. allies in the Caribbean.
“Our nations recognize the importance of countering malign influence, including the destabilizing tactics of the Chinese Communist Party. Protecting democratic institutions and economic independence is a shared priority for both our countries,” Rubio stated.
Humanitarian Support Amid Hurricane Beryl Recovery
Beyond security and diplomacy, the U.S. pledged continued support for Grenada’s recovery efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl, which struck the island with catastrophic force. The Category 4 storm, which made landfall in late January, caused widespread damage to infrastructure and displaced thousands.
Secretary Rubio expressed condolences to the families affected by the disaster, stating, “As you rebuild from the destructive aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, the United States stands with you. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those who lost their lives in this tragedy.”
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and other American agencies have already deployed aid and technical assistance to support Grenada’s rebuilding efforts. The U.S. also pledged further humanitarian assistance to bolster food security, healthcare, and disaster resilience initiatives.
Looking Ahead: A Partnership for Prosperity
As Grenada marks over half a century of independence, the United States reaffirmed its dedication to fostering economic growth, security, and democratic governance in the region.
“The United States wishes Grenada and all its people a very happy Independence Day. We look forward to strengthening our enduring partnership for years to come,” concluded Secretary Rubio.
Background: Grenada-U.S. Relations
Grenada gained independence from the United Kingdom on February 7, 1974. Since then, the island nation has maintained strong diplomatic, trade, and security ties with the United States. The U.S. continues to support Grenada through various initiatives, including economic investments, disaster relief programs, and the CBSI, which strengthens law enforcement capabilities across the Caribbean.
As Grenada celebrates this milestone, the enduring alliance between the two nations signals a shared vision for a safer, more prosperous future in the region.
