U.S. Reaffirms Commitment to Burma on 77th Independence Day

On the eve of Burma’s 77th Independence Day, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken issued a statement reaffirming America’s unwavering commitment to the people of Burma as they commemorate this significant milestone in their nation’s history.

A Longstanding Partnership

As Burma (Myanmar) marks the anniversary of its independence on January 4, the United States continues to stand in solidarity with its people. Secretary Blinken emphasized that the U.S. was among the first nations to recognize Burma’s sovereignty and its right to determine its own future.

“The United States has long supported Burma in its journey toward peace, democracy, and prosperity,” said Blinken. “We remain resolute in our commitment to the Burmese people as they continue to strive for a future characterized by democracy, stability, economic growth, and respect for human rights.”

Call for an End to Violence and a Return to Democracy

Blinken’s statement also underscored the U.S. government’s ongoing call for the Myanmar military regime to end its brutal crackdown on dissent and violence against civilians. Since the military coup in February 2021, Burma has faced widespread repression, with thousands of political prisoners detained, civilians targeted, and the economy crippled by internal conflict.

The United States has repeatedly called for the immediate release of those detained for their political beliefs and peaceful activism, and it continues to demand that the regime allow unhindered humanitarian access to those in need. “The suffering of the Burmese people must end,” Blinken stated, “and we call on the military leadership to take the necessary steps to bring Burma back on the path to democracy.”

Support for an Inclusive Transition

In his message, Blinken reaffirmed the United States’ support for an inclusive, civilian-led transition back to democracy in Burma. He noted that the country’s future can only be secured if all groups, including ethnic minorities and opposition voices, are afforded the opportunity to participate fully in the political process.

“Burma’s future must be determined by the people of Burma. They have shown extraordinary resilience, and they deserve the chance to build a peaceful, democratic society where human rights are respected, and all citizens can thrive,” said Blinken.

The U.S. has consistently pushed for increased international pressure on the military junta, calling for sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and support for the Burmese people in their ongoing struggle for freedom.

Continuing Support for the Burmese People

As Burma commemorates its independence, the United States remains committed to assisting the Burmese people through diplomatic, economic, and humanitarian support. Washington continues to collaborate with global partners to provide aid, assist refugees, and ensure that those responsible for the violence and human rights abuses in Burma are held accountable.

“The United States will not waver in our support for Burma’s people as they work toward a peaceful, democratic future,” Blinken concluded. “We stand with you in this difficult moment, and we will continue to advocate for your right to live in freedom and dignity.”
