U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken will embark on a diplomatic mission to the Republic of Korea (ROK), Japan, France, Italy, and the Holy See from January 4 to January 11, 2025. During his week-long trip, Secretary Blinken will engage in a series of high-level meetings aimed at reinforcing the United States’ international alliances and addressing key global challenges.
Strengthening the U.S.-ROK Alliance
Secretary Blinken’s first stop will be in the Republic of Korea (ROK), where he will meet with senior South Korean government officials. The discussions will center on reaffirming the ironclad U.S.-ROK Alliance, a cornerstone of regional security and stability in the Indo-Pacific. The two sides will explore ways to enhance cooperation on issues ranging from North Korean denuclearization to advancing a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
“The United States remains deeply committed to our enduring alliance with the Republic of Korea. Together, we are tackling challenges that have global implications, and this visit provides an important opportunity to strengthen that partnership even further,” Blinken said ahead of his trip. The Secretary will also focus on trilateral cooperation between the U.S., ROK, and Japan to address shared security and economic concerns.
Building on U.S.-Japan Alliance
From South Korea, Secretary Blinken will travel to Japan, where he will meet with top Japanese officials to review the progress of the U.S.-Japan alliance. Over the past several years, the alliance has seen significant growth, particularly in areas such as defense cooperation, technology, and trade.
Blinken will reaffirm the critical importance of the U.S.-Japan relationship in addressing bilateral, regional, and global issues. He will also underscore the continued importance of trilateral cooperation between the U.S., Japan, and South Korea, particularly in countering emerging security threats, including those posed by North Korea and China.
“We have seen tremendous progress in our relationship with Japan, and I look forward to further strengthening this vital partnership,” Blinken said.
Strengthening Transatlantic Ties in France and Italy
Following his visit to Japan, Secretary Blinken will head to France, where he will meet with senior French officials. The discussions will focus on strengthening the transatlantic relationship and coordinating efforts to address pressing challenges in Europe, the Middle East, and other regions. France remains a key partner in the U.S. strategy to tackle global threats such as terrorism, climate change, and cyberattacks.
In Rome, Blinken will meet with European counterparts to discuss the situation in Syria and reaffirm the U.S. commitment to a peaceful, Syrian-led political transition. The U.S. has long called for an inclusive transition in Syria, with the goal of ending the prolonged conflict and addressing humanitarian needs. Secretary Blinken’s talks in Rome will also include discussions on strengthening European unity, advancing security cooperation, and addressing the ongoing challenges posed by Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
Visit to the Holy See
The final leg of Secretary Blinken’s trip will bring him to Vatican City, where he will meet with Vatican officials to discuss a range of global issues, including religious freedom, climate change, and human rights. The Holy See remains an important global voice for peace, diplomacy, and human rights, and Blinken’s discussions will further cement the longstanding relationship between the United States and the Vatican.
A Critical Moment for Global Diplomacy
Secretary Blinken’s diplomatic mission comes at a crucial time, as the U.S. seeks to enhance international cooperation on a variety of issues, from global security to climate change and human rights. The trip will allow the Secretary to personally engage with key allies and partners in some of the world’s most strategically important regions.
“As we enter the new year, the United States remains committed to working with our allies to address the most pressing challenges of our time,” Blinken concluded. “This trip is an opportunity to reaffirm our shared values and further strengthen our alliances, which are central to advancing peace, security, and prosperity worldwide.”
