U.S. Condemns Houthi Detentions of UN Staff, Calls for Immediate Release

The United States has strongly condemned the unlawful detentions carried out by Houthi militants in Yemen, who forcibly took additional United Nations staff members on January 23, 2025. This latest act is part of a broader campaign of violence by the Houthis, which has already involved the abduction of hundreds of UN, NGO, and diplomatic personnel, including current and former Yemeni staff of the U.S. government.

In response to these unlawful actions, the U.S. reiterated its full support for UN Secretary General António Guterres and the ongoing efforts of the United Nations to secure the unconditional and immediate release of all those held by the Houthis. The U.S. condemned the group’s actions as a clear demonstration of bad faith, undermining their claims to seek de-escalation and highlighting the hypocrisy of their purported representation of the Yemeni people.

The U.S. government also pointed out the Houthis’ failure to adhere to commitments under UN Security Council resolutions, particularly their continued attacks on regional states, U.S. service members, and maritime traffic in the Red Sea and surrounding waterways. These acts of aggression are in direct violation of international agreements and destabilize the region.

The U.S. Executive Order designating the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) reflects the administration’s commitment to holding the group accountable for its reckless and harmful actions. The U.S. has vowed to continue working alongside the UN and international partners to pressure the Houthis into ceasing their violence and securing the safe return of all detainees.
