The United States and the Kingdom of Thailand have officially signed a historic Agreement for Cooperation Concerning Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy, known as the “123 Agreement,” in Bangkok. U.S. Ambassador Robert F. Godec and Thailand’s Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, Supamas Isarabhakdi, formalized the agreement, marking a significant step in bilateral relations.
This agreement provides a comprehensive framework for peaceful nuclear collaboration between the two nations, emphasizing a mutual commitment to nuclear nonproliferation. It enables the transfer of nuclear material, equipment, components, and technical information for research and civil nuclear energy production.
The 123 Agreement will enhance cooperation in energy security and clean energy while strengthening diplomatic and economic ties. The U.S. aims to assist Thailand in developing a civil nuclear energy program that meets the highest standards of safety, security, and nonproliferation.
This renewed collaboration follows the expiration of a similar 1974 agreement in June 2014. The U.S. views this new pact as a key component of supporting Thailand’s energy security and sustainability goals amid advancing clean energy technologies.
