U.S. and Barbados Strengthen Ties in Counter-Terrorism Efforts

Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados today to discuss the strong historic ties between the two nations, as well as regional security efforts aimed at countering transnational threats.

The Trump Administration's commitment to supporting Barbados and all Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Member States was emphasized by Secretary Rubio. Specifically, he designated the Venezuelan criminal network, Tren de Aragua, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO), consistent with domestic authorities. This designation is part of the United States' efforts to counter transnational threats.

During their meeting, Secretary Rubio and Prime Minister Mottley discussed regional security initiatives, including the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative. The partnership focuses on countering illicit narcotics and firearms trafficking, prosecuting transnational organized crime, and strengthening regional security cooperation. Energy cooperation was also on the agenda, with the Prime Minister making a case for the region's economic potential premised on energy.

Secretary Rubio commended Prime Minister Mottley's leadership in stabilizing Haiti, expressing interest in working closely with her on this issue. The Secretary emphasized the importance of bilateral engagement and cooperation between the two nations.

The meeting was seen as an important step in strengthening ties between the United States and Barbados, highlighting the shared commitment to regional security and development.
