Secretary Rubio Reaffirms U.S. Commitment to Democratic Republic of the Congo During Call with President Tshisekedi

Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) President Félix Tshisekedi to discuss the strengthening of U.S.-DRC relations and the continued partnership between the two nations. This introductory call highlighted the U.S. commitment to supporting the DRC’s sovereignty and stability in the face of ongoing challenges.

During the conversation, Secretary Rubio strongly condemned the assault on Goma by the Rwanda-backed M23 militia, reaffirming the United States’ support for the DRC’s territorial integrity. He expressed grave concern over the destabilizing effects of this violence and underscored the U.S. government’s firm stance in protecting the DRC’s sovereignty.

The two leaders also discussed the Luanda Process, with Secretary Rubio and President Tshisekedi agreeing on the importance of advancing the diplomatic efforts led by Angolan President João Lourenço. Both parties emphasized the need for urgent talks between the DRC and Rwanda to de-escalate tensions and find a long-term solution to the crisis.

“Working together, we can help foster peace, security, and stability in the region,” Secretary Rubio stated, reinforcing the United States’ ongoing support for the DRC’s efforts to navigate this complex issue.

The call marked a positive step forward in U.S.-DRC relations, highlighting the shared commitment to regional peace and the determination to resolve tensions through diplomatic dialogue.
