Russia Condemns Western Blockade of Russian Media Channels on Telegram

On December 29, 2024, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova issued a strong condemnation of the ongoing actions by European countries to block Russian media outlets on Telegram. This move, Zakharova stated, is part of a larger campaign by the “collective West” to eliminate any sources of information deemed undesirable by Western governments.

Zakharova highlighted that all EU member states have now blocked Telegram channels belonging to prominent Russian media organizations, including RIA Novosti, Izvestia, RT, Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Channel One, Rossiya 1, and NTV. The blockades have extended to additional channels, with users in these regions receiving notifications of limited access, citing violations of local laws—without providing further explanations for the restrictions. These media outlets had already been sanctioned by the EU in May 2024, and Zakharova warned that this pattern of censorship was likely to continue.

This action, she stated, represents a clear instance of political censorship aimed at stifling dissent. The Russian government views the suppression of these media outlets as a direct violation of international obligations regarding free access to information and media pluralism. Zakharova emphasized that the deprivation of access to independent viewpoints prevents citizens in the West from forming their own opinions on global events and distorts their understanding of the world through a “simulated reality” promoted by mainstream and social media networks controlled by Western elites.

Zakharova called on international organizations, including the UN human rights mechanisms, UNESCO, and the OSCE, to take action and condemn these practices. She specifically urged the new OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Jan Braathu, to break from the policies of his predecessor, who had allegedly ignored attacks on Russian media and journalists.

In closing, Zakharova confirmed that Russia would respond to these actions, including the possibility of implementing reciprocal measures, to protect its media and uphold its right to free speech.
