Tánaiste Reaffirms Ireland’s Commitment to Ukraine as Conflict Enters Third Winter

As Ukraine endures its third winter under the devastating impact of Russia’s ongoing invasion, Tánaiste Micheál Martin has reiterated Ireland’s unwavering support for the Ukrainian people. In a statement released today, Martin highlighted the extreme suffering faced by millions of Ukrainians, who have been displaced from their homes as temperatures plummet amidst relentless Russian aggression.

“Millions have been forced to flee their homeland, and millions more are displaced within Ukraine. As we begin 2025, we are witnessing a humanitarian catastrophe of unparalleled proportions,” said Martin. “The Russian regime continues to target civilians and civilian infrastructure, with the recent bombings of Ukraine’s energy grid on Christmas Day a stark reminder of their indiscriminate violence. These are not the actions of a country seeking peace.”

A Grim Winter for Ukraine

The Tánaiste pointed to the continued atrocities carried out by Russian forces, including the forced deportation of civilians, imprisonment, mistreatment of prisoners of war, and widespread repression in the regions occupied by Russia. “The reports of human rights abuses are harrowing, and the Ukrainian people’s resilience in the face of these injustices is extraordinary,” Martin stated.

Despite the dire circumstances, Ireland has remained steadfast in its support for Ukraine, not only offering humanitarian assistance but also backing Ukraine’s European aspirations.

Ireland’s Ongoing Commitment

In 2024, Ireland committed an additional €36 million in bilateral support to Ukraine, aimed at providing critical humanitarian aid, supporting winterisation efforts, and laying the foundation for future reconstruction. This funding is part of Ireland’s broader efforts to assist Ukraine in its pursuit of peace, stability, and political sovereignty.

“Ireland’s assistance has focused on shelter, cash assistance, and other immediate winter support for those displaced by the war. We have also welcomed Ukrainians to our shores, offering refuge to those who have been forced to flee,” said Martin. “In addition, we have continued to support Ukraine in its efforts to align itself with European norms, reinforcing its path towards a future within the European family of nations.”

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

In September 2024, Ireland and Ukraine signed a comprehensive bilateral agreement designed to deepen cooperation and mutual support. The agreement reaffirms Ireland’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, sending a strong political and practical message that Ireland will not waver in the face of Russian aggression.

“This agreement is a declaration of our continued support for Ukraine as it defends its land and people. It signals our determination to uphold the principles of international law and the rules-based international order,” Martin said. “While peace may seem distant today, it is vital that we work with our EU and international partners to forge a just and lasting resolution to this crisis.”

Defending European Freedoms

Martin stressed the wider implications of the ongoing conflict, underscoring that the defense of Ukraine is not just the defense of one nation, but of the broader values of freedom, democracy, and security that underpin both Irish and European foreign policy.

“Through their courageous defense, Ukrainians are also defending the freedoms and rights that we hold dear as Europeans: the right to live in peace within their own borders, free from aggression. If Russia is allowed to prevail, the consequences will be felt across the continent,” said Martin.

Ireland’s Continued Support

Looking ahead to 2025, Martin reaffirmed Ireland’s unwavering commitment to standing with Ukraine. “This is a battle for the future of Europe and for the principles that have always guided our foreign policy. Ireland will continue to stand with Ukraine, now and in the future,” he concluded.

As the conflict enters another year, the international community faces an urgent need to rally behind Ukraine to support its sovereignty and the preservation of fundamental human rights. Ireland, in lockstep with its European partners, will remain a staunch ally in the fight for peace and justice in Ukraine.
