From December 12 through December 15, 2024, Portugal’s Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Paulo Rangel, makes an formal visit to India. Following the meeting between Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Portuguese Prime Minister H. E. Luis Montenegro at the G20 Summit in Rio last month, his second visit to India comes at a time when relations between India and Portugal are regaining momentum.
Dr. S. Jaishankar, the secretary of outside matters, had fruitful discussions with Minister Rangel on December 13, 2024. The discussions covered a wide range of diplomatic issues, including those involving people-to-people ties, trade and investment, defense cooperation, science and technology, commerce, culture, and people-to-people ties. Both officials acknowledged the growing potential for cooperation in cutting-edge fields like green hydrogen and companies and innovations. They also emphasized the role of qualified worker migration, especially for young people and professionals.
The Ministers agreed to maintain close participation in international forums, including the UN, with the Ministers agreeing to do so at global and regional levels. Dr. Jaishankar expressed gratitude for Portugal’s unwavering support for India’s permanent participation in the UN Security Council and its contribution to strengthening EU-Indian relationships.
Both leaders agreed to honor the approaching 50th anniversary of India and Portugal’s 2025 political relationship in a meaningful and collaborative way.
Minister Rangel met with Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal to talk about possible ways to improve financial participation while on his trip. Furthermore, he is scheduled to travel to Goa to meet with the state’s honorable governor and deputy minister. In India-Portugal connections, Goa is a vibrant hub for both diplomatic cultural exchanges and has a historical and cultural significance.
This visit opens a new book in India-Portugal relations by utilizing both countries ‘shared goals to advance their traditional relationships. The visit is anticipated to strengthen this enduring and dynamic partnership as it gets a new target on trade, technology, sustainability, and cultural change.
