India and US Sign Landmark MoU to Enhance Cybercrime Investigations

India and the United States have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen cooperation in the field of cybercrime investigations. The MoU was formalized on January 17, 2025, in Washington, D.C., marking a significant step in bolstering bilateral security cooperation in the digital age.

The agreement was signed by Shri Vinay Kwatra, Ambassador of India to the United States, and Ms. Kristie Canegallo, Acting United States Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS).

Under this MoU, India’s Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs, will work closely with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its key constituent agencies, including the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Homeland Security Investigations Cyber Crimes Center (C3).

The MoU aims to facilitate enhanced collaboration between the two nations’ law enforcement agencies in areas such as cyber threat intelligence sharing, digital forensics, and capacity-building initiatives for tackling sophisticated cybercrime networks.

Cybercrime has become a pressing global challenge with its connections to terrorism, violent extremism, terror financing, drug trafficking, organized crime, human trafficking, illegal migration, money laundering, and transportation security. This MoU reflects the shared commitment of India and the U.S. to address these threats comprehensively.

By leveraging shared expertise and resources, the agreement is expected to improve investigative capabilities, prevent cross-border cyber threats, and promote the use of advanced technologies in criminal investigations. It also strengthens the security pillar of the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

This MoU underscores the growing convergence between India and the U.S. in tackling global security challenges and reinforces their shared vision for a secure and resilient cyberspace.
