The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention, an annual celebration of the Indian diaspora, concluded successfully on January 10, 2025, in partnership with the Indian government and regional authorities. This year’s convention marked a significant milestone as it was the first to take place in Eastern India, showcasing the region’s historical and cultural importance. Delegates from over 75 countries gathered to honor the theme of global connectivity and progress.
Day 1: Empowering the Diaspora Youth
The convention opened on January 8, 2025, with the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. Dr. Dev Pragad, CEO of Newsweek, served as the Guest of Honor. The inaugural plenary, “Beyond Barriers: Diaspora Youth Leadership in a Globalized World,” chaired by Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister for Youth Affairs and Labour, emphasized the potential of young diaspora leaders. Discussions included political, academic, and business contributions from global Indian communities.
The day also featured a business session co-chaired by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and a local dignitary, highlighting economic and technological opportunities. Two thematic sessions explored India’s cultural and economic narratives, followed by an engaging cultural performance showcasing regional art.
Day 2: Fostering Connections and Sustainable Development
On January 9, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the convention. Addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest, President of Trinidad and Tobago Christine Carla Kangaloo, joined virtually, expressing pride in her Indian heritage and commending India’s global contributions. Prime Minister Modi urged the diaspora to support India’s developmental goals, emphasizing the preservation of history and cultural heritage through digitization.
The day’s plenary sessions explored themes like “Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers” and “Green Connections: Contributions to Sustainable Development,” chaired by prominent government leaders. Exhibitions spotlighting the diaspora’s technological and cultural contributions were inaugurated alongside the Pravasi Bharatiya Express. The day concluded with a vibrant cultural gala celebrating Indian diversity.
Day 3: Celebrating Women and Cultural Bonds
The final day on January 10, 2025, highlighted women’s leadership under the theme “Diaspora Divas: Celebrating Women’s Leadership and Influence – Nari Shakti,” chaired by Dr. S. Jaishankar. Discussions revolved around initiatives advancing gender equity and economic development.
A second plenary session titled “Diaspora Dialogues: Stories of Cultural Connection and Belonging” underscored the enduring ties between the diaspora and their ancestral roots. These discussions were complemented by interactions between ministers and diaspora representatives from regions such as the USA, UK, and Southeast Asia.
Valedictory Session and Awards
The Honorable President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, presided over the valedictory session, commending the diaspora’s contributions to global progress and India’s development. She highlighted government initiatives for diaspora engagement, including enhanced consular services and cultural exchange programs.
The event culminated with the presentation of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards to 27 distinguished individuals from 24 countries, honoring their achievements and contributions. A santoor concert by Maestro Abhay Rustum Sopori provided a soulful conclusion to the convention.
