India’s Foreign Secretary, Shri Vikram Misri, addressed the media in Dhaka today, reflecting on his discussions with Bangladeshi counterparts and reaffirming India’s commitment to a strong, mutually beneficial partnership with Bangladesh.
Shri Misri emphasized the significance of the visit, marking the first structured engagement at the Foreign Secretary level following political changes in Bangladesh earlier this year. “Since the political changes in August, our leaders have maintained close contact. This visit builds on the exchanges between our Prime Minister, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, and other senior officials,” he stated.
Focus on Bilateral Relations
The discussions covered a wide range of bilateral issues, including trade, connectivity, energy, and development cooperation. Shri Misri highlighted the people-centric approach that has defined India-Bangladesh relations, stressing that “the benefit of all the people remains the central motivational force” behind their partnership.
He noted India’s ongoing support through development projects and daily engagement across sectors such as power, water, and cultural cooperation. “There is no reason why this mutually beneficial cooperation should not continue to deliver in the interest of both our peoples,” he added.
Addressing Concerns
The Foreign Secretary candidly addressed India’s concerns regarding the safety and welfare of minorities in Bangladesh and incidents of attacks on cultural, religious, and diplomatic properties. He expressed confidence in a constructive approach from the Bangladeshi authorities to resolve these issues.
A Forward-Looking Approach
Shri Misri reiterated India’s willingness to work closely with the Interim Government of Bangladesh to ensure a positive, forward-looking relationship. “We are committed to moving the relationship forward in a positive and constructive direction,” he concluded.
The visit reflects India’s resolve to strengthen ties with Bangladesh, reinforcing mutual trust and collaboration on shared regional and global challenges.
