India’s Foreign Secretary Highlights Strong Ties During Dhaka Visit

India’s Foreign Secretary, Shri Vikram Misri, concluded a significant visit to Dhaka today, underscoring India’s commitment to fostering a strong, cooperative relationship with Bangladesh. During his visit, Shri Misri met with key leaders of the Interim Government, including the Chief Adviser, H.E. Dr. Muhammad Yunus, and the Foreign Affairs Adviser, H.E. Md. Touhid Hossain. He also engaged in Foreign Office Consultations with Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary, H.E. Mr. Jashim Uddin.

Advancing Bilateral Ties

Shri Misri reaffirmed India’s support for a democratic, stable, and inclusive Bangladesh. He emphasized the importance of mutual trust and respect in the relationship and highlighted the people-centric approach to India’s development cooperation with Bangladesh. “India’s engagements in connectivity, trade, energy, and capacity building are designed to benefit the people of Bangladesh,” he stated.

Addressing Key Concerns

The Foreign Secretary also discussed recent developments, including concerns related to the safety and welfare of minorities. He expressed regret over recent incidents involving attacks on cultural, religious, and diplomatic properties, urging collaborative efforts to ensure such events do not recur.

Comprehensive Discussions

During the Foreign Office Consultations, both sides held extensive talks on various issues, including:

  • Political and security cooperation
  • Border management
  • Trade, commerce, and connectivity
  • Collaboration in water, power, and energy sectors
  • Development cooperation and cultural exchanges

The discussions also touched on regional integration under the BIMSTEC framework and other multilateral platforms. Both sides agreed to enhance consultations to further regional cooperation.

The visit is expected to sustain and deepen bilateral engagement, addressing mutual concerns and advancing key issues. India and Bangladesh continue to enjoy a robust partnership, characterized by shared cultural ties, economic cooperation, and a vision for regional development.
