The Canadian government has pledged over $116 million in humanitarian, development, and peace security assistance funding to support the people affected by ongoing conflicts in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In a statement released today from Ottawa, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development Mélanie Joly announced that Canada is committed to doing its part to alleviate the suffering of millions of people caught up in these crises. The funding includes $75 million for Sudan and over $41 million for the DRC.
The situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate, with more than 12.8 million people forced to flee due to fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. In contrast, hundreds of thousands have been displaced in eastern DRC amid escalating violence.
In response, Canada is providing $60 million in humanitarian assistance funding for Sudan, including support from the UN, Red Cross, and NGO partners. This brings Canada's total humanitarian response in Sudan to $64 million in 2025. Development assistance funding will focus on enhancing the dignity and safety of survivors of conflict-related sexual violence, while peace security funding aims to protect civilians and humanitarian workers.
In the DRC, over $26 million has been allocated for humanitarian assistance funding, with an additional $15 million dedicated to supporting local civil society in protecting women and girls from gender-based violence. These efforts will be carried out by Canada's partners through the UN, Red Cross, and NGO organizations.
Canada is urging all parties involved in these conflicts to protect civilians and facilitate safe passage of humanitarian aid. The Minister emphasized Canada's commitment to making Sudan and the DRC safer and supporting a peaceful resolution through inclusive dialogue.
"We call on all parties to cease hostilities and conduct negotiations in good faith," said Minister Joly. "Canada will continue to support those affected by these crises, while also advocating for accountability for international humanitarian law and human rights law violations."
The Canadian government's response to the crisis in Sudan is part of a broader commitment to addressing urgent needs across the globe.
