In a significant development, Deputy Prime Minister PRAK Sokhonn met with German Ambassador Stefan Messerer on January 27, 2025, to discuss enhancing Cambodia-Germany cooperation. On 28 Jan 2025, His Excellency PRAK Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Ambassador Messerer recalled the historical milestones in Cambodia-Germany relations. These include the official visit of H.E. Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German President, to Cambodia in February 2023, and the fruitful talks between Samdech Techo Hun Sen and H.E. Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor, on the sidelines of the ASEAN-EU Commemorative Summit in Brussels in December 2022.
The two officials noted with satisfaction the growing ties between the two countries and the progress of bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, sustainable development, mine clearance, and energy. They agreed that there is still much more room for expanding bilateral trade, which has exceeded US$1 billion in recent years.
To this end, His Excellency PRAK Sokhonn suggested that both countries consider appreciating Germany’s invaluable contributions to Cambodia’s development. The German Ambassador reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to be a strong partner for Cambodia’s socio-economic development and working to further strengthen bilateral ties.
Ambassador Messerer also welcomed the opening of the German Honorary Consulate in Siem Reap, reflecting Germany’s increasing interest in Cambodia.
