Sri Lanka condemns attacks on civilian airports in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The statement extends its sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured. The Ministry expresses its solidarity with the Government and the people of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and calls upon all parties to exercise maximum restraint and engage in constructive dialogue to de-escalate tensions.
Context
The announcement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs represents a formal response to an unspecified event involving attacks on civilian airports within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The statement’s focus on expressing condolences and calling for restraint suggests a prioritization of diplomatic engagement and a cautious approach to the situation. The lack of specific details regarding the attacks—the number of casualties, the nature of the assault, or the perpetrators—is notable. The statement does not address the potential implications of these attacks on regional security or Sri Lanka’s existing relationships with Saudi Arabia. The Ministry’s prior statements, specifically the presentation of credentials for the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China on 26 August 2026 and the High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam on 25 August 2026, demonstrate a continued emphasis on multilateral diplomacy and engagement with key international partners. These events, while significant in their own right, do not provide context for the current situation regarding attacks on Saudi Arabian airports. The statement does not mention any ongoing security concerns or intelligence assessments that might inform Sri Lanka’s response.
