US Imposes Visa Restrictions on Nicaraguan Regime Officials

The United States has taken decisive steps to impose visa restrictions on more than 250 regime officials of the Nicaraguan dictatorship. The move is part of a broader effort by the U.S. government to hold accountable those responsible for undermining democratic institutions in Nicaragua.

As the country marks seven years since a brutal wave of repression against protestors, the U.S. remains committed to supporting the Nicaraguan people's desire for freedom and democracy. The regime's actions have had devastating consequences, forcing many into exile and depriving them of their fundamental freedoms.

The visa restrictions are imposed pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 10309, which suspends entry into the United States as immigrants and nonimmigrants for members of the Government of Nicaragua and other individuals who formulate, implement, or benefit from policies or actions that undermine democratic institutions. This action is a significant step forward in the U.S.'s efforts to hold accountable those responsible for Nicaragua's ongoing crisis.

The Nicaraguan government has been under scrutiny for years due to its erosion of democratic norms and its attacks on civil society. The U.S. government will continue to monitor the situation and take necessary actions to support the Nicaraguan people in their pursuit of freedom and democracy.
