The United States and Vietnam are strengthening their economic cooperation and addressing regional and global challenges as part of a year-long commemoration of the 30th anniversary of their relations. Senior Bureau Official Sean O’Neill traveled to Hanoi, April 16-20, to meet with Vietnamese officials and discuss key topics covered by the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP).
The meeting focused on ways to balance trade imbalances between the two countries, as well as cooperation to address regional and global challenges. The discussion included the importance of peacefully resolving disputes in accordance with international law, particularly in the South China Sea region. O’Neill and his counterparts also spoke about combating illegal immigration, trafficking in persons, cyberscam operations, and other transnational crimes that affect Americans, Vietnamese, and the region.
The Senior Bureau Official observed dioxin remediation efforts at Bien Hoa Air Base, a joint project between the United States and Vietnam aimed at addressing the legacies of war. This cooperative effort highlights the strong bilateral cooperation on this issue.
As part of the year-long commemoration of U.S.-Vietnam relations, O’Neill's visit marks an important milestone in strengthening their strategic partnership. The two countries are working together to address a range of pressing issues and promote peace, prosperity, and security in the region.
