The United States is leading the global fight against illicit fentanyl manufacturing and trafficking, with a recent move targeting a key Mexican-based network involved in fuel theft, crude oil smuggling, and fentanyl trafficking. The Treasury Department has sanctioned three Mexican nationals and two Mexico-based entities linked to the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), generating hundreds of millions of dollars annually through various criminal activities.
The sanctions follow the recent designation of CJNG as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). The Department of State is also offering a reward of up to $15 million for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, aka “El Mencho”, the co-founder and current leader of CJNG. This action further demonstrates the Trump Administration's commitment to eliminating cartels and protecting the safety of American people.
The United States has taken a tough stance against CJNG, having previously sanctioned the organization in April 2015 and December 2021. The Department of State designated CJNG in February 2025. Today's sanctions actions were pursued under Executive Order (E.O.) 14059 and 13224, as amended.
