U.S. and Yemen Strengthen Cooperation to Counter Houthi Threats and Protect Regional Security

Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a crucial conversation with Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed bin Mubarak on January 24, 2025, to discuss efforts to counter the growing threat posed by the Houthi rebels and to enhance bilateral cooperation in ensuring regional stability.

Countering Houthi Aggression and Protecting Maritime Security
During the discussion, Secretary Rubio and Prime Minister bin Mubarak emphasized their shared commitment to halting the Houthi attacks that destabilize the region, with a particular focus on protecting Red Sea maritime security and surrounding waterways. Both leaders underscored the importance of eliminating the Houthis’ military capabilities to restore peace and security in Yemen and its neighboring countries.

The Secretary and Prime Minister also addressed the alarming issue of unlawful Houthi detentions, including the capture of diplomatic, UN, and NGO staff. Recent detentions of additional UN personnel, along with current and former Yemeni staff from the U.S. Mission to Yemen, were highlighted as significant concerns that require immediate attention.

U.S. Action on Houthi Threat
Secretary Rubio reiterated the United States’ firm stance on the Houthi threat, pointing to President Biden’s Executive Order re-designating the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. This designation aims to curb the group’s influence and deter their destabilizing actions. The U.S. government remains committed to supporting the legitimate Yemeni government in its fight against the Houthis and in ensuring the protection of international personnel and humanitarian workers in the region.

Strengthening Bilateral Support and Regional Peace
Secretary Rubio expressed the U.S. commitment to continuing its partnership with the Republic of Yemen, reinforcing efforts to address the Houthi menace while promoting a peaceful and secure future for Yemen. Both leaders agreed on the need for further collaboration, with a focus on both security and humanitarian priorities.

The call highlighted the ongoing importance of U.S.-Yemen cooperation in addressing the complex challenges facing the region, ensuring stability, and upholding international law.
