Summer Travel Ahead: US Passport Applications Soar to Record Highs

As the summer travel season approaches, U.S. citizens are advised to check their passport expiration dates and apply for new or renewed passports ahead of planned travel. The U.S. Department of State has set a record for passport processing, issuing over 500,000 passports each week in 2025.

The online passport renewal system has seen significant success, with more than two million Americans successfully renewing their passports online since its introduction. The digitized application process eliminates the need to send documents by mail, making it easier and more efficient for travelers.

With summer travel plans taking off soon, there are several key reminders to keep in mind. Routine passport processing typically takes four to six weeks, while expedited processing can take two to three weeks, excluding mailing times. Travelers planning international air travel will need a valid U.S. passport book, while those embarking on domestic flights must comply with REAL ID requirements starting May 7, 2025.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will enforce REAL ID requirements at all domestic airport security checkpoints from that date onwards. Valid U.S. passport books and cards are accepted alternatives to REAL ID for domestic air travel. Travelers are urged to ensure they have either a REAL ID or an acceptable alternative before the deadline.

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) allows Americans to enroll in their trip abroad, enabling emergency contact in case of an emergency. The program provides real-time email updates on health, weather, safety, and security.
