G7 Maritime Security and Prosperity Declaration

The G7 countries have issued the G7 Maritime Security and Prosperity Declaration, which aims to promote maritime security, sustainability, and prosperity in the world’s oceans.

The declaration emphasizes the importance of cooperation among nations to address common maritime challenges, including piracy, armed robbery, and illegal fishing. It also highlights the need for robust cybersecurity measures to protect against malicious cyber incidents on maritime logistical networks.

The G7 countries pledge to work together with non-G7 partners, including countries hosting major ports or extensive flag registries, to promote a free and open maritime order based on the rule of law. They also commit to strengthening enforcement against IUU (illegal, unreported, and unregulated) fishing and promoting sustainable stewardship of maritime resources.

Key aspects of the declaration include:

  • Enhancing diplomatic efforts and exchanging best practices among national authorities, relevant international and regional organizations, and industry sectors to accelerate the clean-up of UXO (unexploded ordnance) from the seas and ocean.
  • Strengthening port security and modernizing infrastructure to maintain safe and efficient maritime trade.
  • Encouraging robust cooperation with non-G7 partners to promote a free and open maritime order based on the rule of law.

The G7 countries also welcome the Third UN Ocean Conference, which will take place in Nice, France, from June 9-13, 2025. This conference aims to address global ocean challenges and promote sustainable development of the world’s maritime spaces.
