Secretary Rubio’s Statement on Australia Day: Celebrating 85 Years of U.S.-Australia Diplomatic Relations

On the occasion of Australia Day, Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended his warmest wishes to the people of Australia, recognizing January 26 as a day of national pride and reflection.

A Strong and Unbreakable Bond
In his statement, Secretary Rubio highlighted the enduring friendship between the United States and Australia, forged through shared sacrifice and a mutual commitment to upholding freedom and democracy. “For over a century, Australians and Americans have stood together side-by-side in times of conflict and peace,” Secretary Rubio said, reflecting on the strength of the bilateral relationship that continues to thrive.

Anniversaries of Significance
This year marks two significant milestones in U.S.-Australia relations: the 85th anniversary of diplomatic ties and the 20th anniversary of the U.S.-Australia Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA). These anniversaries celebrate the longstanding collaboration between the two nations, which has helped shape a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. Secretary Rubio underscored that both bilaterally and through regional groupings such as the Quad, the U.S.-Australia relationship continues to be a cornerstone for regional stability and growth.

Strengthening Security and Economic Ties
Secretary Rubio also praised Australia as a key partner in addressing the challenges posed by foreign coercion and ensuring reliable supply chains for critical minerals. “Australia is a critical ally, helping free nations stand tall in the face of threats, and working with us to deliver for our partners in the Pacific,” he stated. The defense and security ties between the two nations, including through the AUKUS partnership, have never been stronger, with both countries actively working to enhance military cooperation.

Economically, the relationship has flourished, with trade nearly doubling over the past two decades. The United States remains Australia’s largest source of foreign investment and is also the largest recipient of Australian foreign investments, underscoring the strong commercial and economic ties between the nations.

Looking Ahead: A Continued Partnership
Secretary Rubio concluded by emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration between the U.S. and Australia in the years to come. “The United States looks forward to working even more closely with our Australian mates,” he said, signaling the shared optimism for an even stronger partnership moving forward.

A Happy Australia Day
Secretary Rubio offered his sincere wishes for a safe and happy Australia Day to all Australians, reinforcing the close and enduring relationship between the two nations.
