Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met today in Ankara with Turkish President Recep Erdoğan to discuss the latest developments in Syria. During their meeting, Secretary Blinken reaffirmed the strength of U.S.-Turkish regional cooperation and emphasized the shared interest in supporting a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political transition to an accountable and inclusive government.
He stressed the importance of ensuring that all actors in Syria respect human rights, uphold international humanitarian law, and take all necessary steps to protect civilians, particularly members of minority groups. Secretary Blinken also highlighted the need to facilitate the flow of humanitarian assistance to those in need and ensure the protection of displaced Syrians.
Further, the Secretary underscored the necessity of continuing the mission of the Coalition to Defeat ISIS to ensure that terrorism does not regain a foothold in the region. Additionally, they discussed the critical need for a ceasefire agreement in Gaza that ensures the release of hostages and increases humanitarian support to vulnerable Palestinian civilians.
