Secretary Blinken Discusses Syria’s Transition and U.S. Priorities in Aqaba

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke to the press today at King Hussein International Airport in Aqaba, Jordan, offering insights on the ongoing efforts to address the crisis in Syria. Blinken highlighted both the potential for progress and the challenges facing the region as the U.S. works with regional allies to support a transition away from Bashar al-Assad’s dictatorship in Syria.

In his remarks, Blinken emphasized the critical role Jordan plays in this effort, given its proximity to Syria and the significant impact the conflict has had on Jordan. He stressed that the U.S. does not seek to dictate Syria’s future but rather to ensure that the Syrian people are able to choose their own path forward. He underscored several guiding principles for any future Syrian government, including inclusivity, protection of human rights, and the importance of maintaining state institutions to provide essential services.

Blinken reaffirmed that the U.S. would continue to focus on ensuring Syria does not become a haven for terrorism or extremism. He also reiterated the need to secure and destroy any chemical weapons remaining in Syria. The Secretary discussed the importance of regional cooperation, noting that the U.S. is in close talks with partners, including Jordan and Turkey, to coordinate efforts for Syria’s transition.

Regarding the issue of detainees, Blinken highlighted ongoing efforts to locate and bring home Americans detained in Syria, including journalist Austin Tice, and reaffirmed that the U.S. would persist in this mission. On Israel’s military actions in Syria, Blinken stated that the U.S. understands Israel’s concerns about security in the region but stressed the need for restraint to prevent further conflict escalation.

Finally, Blinken expressed optimism that Syria has a unique opportunity to emerge from years of dictatorship and conflict, with the possibility of a government that is representative of all Syrians and accountable to its people. The U.S. remains committed to supporting the Syrian people in realizing this aspiration.
