Marco Rubio, First Latino Secretary of State, Outlines U.S. Foreign Policy Priorities

In an exclusive interview with Craig Melvin on NBC Today, Secretary of State-designate Marco Rubio discussed his vision for U.S. foreign policy under President Donald Trump’s administration. Rubio, who made history as the first Latino to serve as Secretary of State, emphasized a focus on diplomacy, stability, and national security while sidestepping domestic political debates.

On January 6 Pardons

Rubio declined to engage directly with questions about President Trump’s controversial decision to pardon nearly 1,600 January 6 defendants, which drew widespread international attention. Instead, he highlighted his commitment to advancing U.S. interests abroad.

“My job is to focus on the President’s foreign policy. The priority of the Department of State will be making America stronger, safer, and more prosperous,” Rubio stated. He emphasized his immediate focus on meeting with allies, including the foreign ministers of Australia, India, and Japan (the Quad), to strengthen cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Ending the War in Ukraine

Rubio reaffirmed the administration’s intent to bring the war in Ukraine to a close, a key campaign promise by President Trump. However, he acknowledged the complexity of achieving a sustainable resolution to the conflict.

“This tragic war, started by Vladimir Putin, has inflicted tremendous suffering on Ukraine and disrupted European stability,” Rubio said. “The President has made it clear that the war must end. It’s a complex challenge, but we’ll pursue vigorous diplomacy to achieve a lasting peace that ensures Ukraine’s security and prevents future conflicts.”

Rubio underscored that both sides would need to compromise to end the stalemate, adding, “Russia has already faced significant consequences—crippling sanctions, economic instability, and massive losses. Diplomacy, not public pronouncements, will be the key to ending this war in a sustainable way.”

National Security and TikTok

On the topic of TikTok, Rubio addressed concerns over the app’s potential national security risks due to its ties to the Chinese government. While previously supporting a ban, Rubio defended President Trump’s decision to delay enforcement to explore alternatives.

“The law allows the President time to consider options, including a potential arrangement that protects U.S. security interests,” Rubio explained. He emphasized that the administration’s priority is ensuring that any resolution mitigates risks while addressing the app’s popularity among Americans.

A Vision for Peace and Prosperity

Rubio framed the administration’s foreign policy as straightforward: prioritizing U.S. interests while promoting global peace and stability. “President Trump’s vision is to engage U.S. power and influence to resolve conflicts and make the world safer. This includes addressing the war in Ukraine, countering threats from adversaries, and deepening alliances,” he said.

As Rubio prepares to assume office, his diplomatic approach will be closely watched as the administration navigates challenges ranging from protracted conflicts to rising geopolitical tensions.
