ECOWAS Approves Establishment of Special Tribunal for The Gambia to Address Human Rights Violations

The United States has expressed its strong support for the historic decision by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to establish a Special Tribunal for The Gambia. This new tribunal will focus on investigating and prosecuting gross human rights violations and international crimes committed under the regime of former dictator Yahya Jammeh, who ruled the country from July 1994 to January 2017.

The Special Tribunal aims to bring justice to the victims of widespread abuses during Jammeh’s rule, including extrajudicial killings, torture, and other serious crimes. The United States congratulated both ECOWAS and the Government of The Gambia for their commitment to confronting the past and pursuing accountability.

“The Gambia has shown admirable courage in facing its past and committing to a democratic future,” said U.S. Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller. “We commend ECOWAS for its leadership and commitment to human rights and justice.”

The U.S. has pledged continued support for The Gambia’s efforts toward justice and peace in the region, working alongside ECOWAS and the government to ensure accountability and foster lasting peace in West Africa.
