Ukraine’s Independence Day: A Call to Action Against Russia’s War of Aggression

The Ukrainian people's unwavering resolve to defend their homeland and sovereignty is a testament to the enduring power of freedom and self-determination. As the international community gathers to mark another year since Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union, it is imperative that we recognize the gravity of the situation and take concrete steps to ensure a just and lasting peace.

The Russian Federation's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has had a devastating impact on the country, with thousands of civilians killed, injured, or displaced. The international community has been vocal in its condemnation of Russia's actions, but it is time for concrete action to be taken. The Ukrainian people's fight for freedom and self-determination is not only a matter of national interest but also a cornerstone of Euro-Atlantic security.

Historically, Ukraine's bid for independence was recognized by the international community, including Russia, in 1991. The country took its rightful place as a sovereign nation among equals, with 92% of voters supporting this decision. Unfortunately, 34 years later, Ukrainians are once again fighting for their freedom and sovereignty against an aggressor.

Russia's objective, from the beginning, appears to be the elimination of Ukraine as a separate and independent entity. President Putin's actions have been characterized by a blatant disregard for international law and the principles enshrined in the Helsinki Final Act. The international community must hold Russia accountable for its actions and demand that it respects Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Key stakeholders, including the United States, European Union, and other countries, have offered support to Ukraine, but more needs to be done. The Ukrainian people deserve ironclad security guarantees to effectively defend their sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Coalition of the Willing is ready to play an active role in supporting Ukraine's efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace.

The United Kingdom has been steadfast in its support for Ukraine's independence, and we will continue to tighten the screws on Russia's war machine until peace is secured. We will maintain our military, humanitarian, and diplomatic support and use every platform available to call out Russia's violations of its commitments.

As we move forward, it is essential that we recognize the human cost of this conflict. The Ukrainian people have suffered greatly, with many facing the devastating consequences of war. It is our responsibility to ensure that their sacrifices are not in vain and that a just and lasting peace is achieved.

In conclusion, the international community must come together to support Ukraine's efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace. We must recognize the gravity of the situation and take concrete steps to hold Russia accountable for its actions. The Ukrainian people deserve our unwavering support, and their courage inspires us all.
