In a move aimed at supporting Ukraine’s struggling economy, Sweden has launched an initiative to increase the availability of Ukrainian products in Swedish grocery stores. The new program, dubbed “Trade Nation Sweden Together for Ukraine,” was presented by Swedish Foreign Minister Benjamin Dousa and Ukrainian Agrarian Policy and Food Minister Vitalii Koval on May 16, 2025, at a press conference in Stockholm.
The initiative is part of Sweden’s ongoing efforts to support Ukraine in the face of ongoing conflict. With the aim of providing Swedish consumers with increased access to Ukrainian products and opportunities to contribute to the country’s economic development, the program includes three key components: an expedited procedure for Ukrainian suppliers, targeted marketing campaigns, and donations of equipment such as refrigerated trucks.
Leading retailers ICA Sverige, Coop, and Axfood have already joined forces with the Swedish government to support the initiative. ICA Sweden CEO Eric Lundberg stated that the program aims to make it easier for Ukrainian food companies to reach the Swedish market, thereby contributing to long-term economic development in Ukraine while providing customers with more opportunities to purchase Ukrainian products.
“We are proud to be part of this new Swedish trade initiative for Ukraine,” Lundberg said. “By strengthening our business connections with Ukraine, we strive to contribute to the country’s economic development and promote long-term support to the Ukrainian people.”
Coop Sweden Acting CEO Anders Torell also expressed his organization’s commitment to the program, stating that they look forward to exploring ways to enhance their engagement for Ukraine and offer Coop members and customers more Ukrainian products.
Axfood, meanwhile, has already implemented an expedited procedure for Ukrainian suppliers and made private financial donations. The company’s Deputy CEO Peter Holm noted that the initiative is a step in the right direction, highlighting the potential for Swedish businesses to support Ukraine in various ways.
The launch of “Trade Nation Sweden Together for Ukraine” marks a significant development in Sweden’s efforts to provide economic support to Ukraine. With this new program, Swedish consumers will have greater access to Ukrainian products, while also contributing to the country’s long-term economic development and promoting freedom and security for all Europe.
As Benjamin Dousa emphasized during the press conference, “No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.” The Swedish government’s commitment to supporting Ukraine is a testament to its dedication to helping those in need. With this initiative, Sweden takes another step towards strengthening its economic ties with Ukraine and promoting peace and stability throughout Europe.
