Singapore has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing climate change, reiterating its call for increased ambition and cooperation among nations in the face of rising global temperatures.
Speaking at the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry and Foreign Minister, Mr. Gan Kim Boon, emphasized the need for collective action to mitigate the effects of climate change.
“Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time,” said Minister Gan. “We must work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase renewable energy capacity, and enhance resilience to the impacts of climate change.”
Singapore has been an active participant in international efforts to address climate change, having ratified the Paris Agreement and implemented various measures to reduce its carbon footprint.
Regional Leadership on Climate Change
Singapore has also played a key role in regional initiatives aimed at addressing climate change. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Climate Change Working Group, which Singapore chairs, is working to promote cooperation and coordination among ASEAN member states on climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Key Commitments
“Singapore will continue to work with our international partners to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement,” said Minister Gan. “We also pledge to increase our support for developing countries in their efforts to adapt to climate change.”
In addition, Singapore has committed to reducing its carbon intensity by 36% by 2030 compared to 2000 levels.
Global Cooperation
Singapore recognizes that addressing climate change requires global cooperation and collective action. The country will continue to work with international organizations such as the United Nations, the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to promote sustainable development and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
“We must work together to address the challenges of climate change,” said Minister Gan. “Singapore is committed to playing a strong role in this effort.”
Conclusion
Singapore’s commitment to addressing climate change is unwavering. The country’s leadership on this issue is a testament to its dedication to promoting sustainable development and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
In the face of rising global temperatures, Singapore’s role in regional and international efforts to address climate change will be critical in determining the success of these initiatives.
