In a move to strengthen regional cooperation and promote stability in the Asia-Pacific region, Singapore has announced its commitment to enhancing ties with Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries.
At the 37th ASEAN Summit held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on November 12-13, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong stressed the importance of maintaining regional peace and security. He also highlighted the need for stronger economic ties between ASEAN member states and their partners, including Singapore.
"Singapore is committed to supporting ASEAN's efforts to build a dynamic, responsive, and competitive community," Prime Minister Lee said in his opening address at the summit.
During the two-day summit, Singaporean officials engaged with their ASEAN counterparts on various issues, including counter-terrorism, maritime security, and climate change. The country also pledged to provide support for the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore has been actively involved in regional organizations such as the United Nations, World Trade Organization, APEC, and ASEAN.
"The country plays an active role in these regional and global communities," said the statement. "It is also committed to supporting international efforts to address key global challenges, including climate change, counter-terrorism, and cybersecurity."
Singapore's overseas missions worldwide are also working closely with their host countries to promote bilateral relations and cooperation.
In addition to its regional engagements, Singapore has been actively involved in international organizations such as the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The country has submitted its instrument of accession to the WTO's Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, paving the way for its entry into force.
Singapore also made significant progress in addressing key international issues, including climate change and sustainable development. The country's Voluntary National Review (VNR) at the United Nations was well-received by stakeholders, highlighting its commitment to achieving a low-carbon economy.
In conclusion, Singapore's diplomatic efforts aim to promote regional stability, strengthen economic ties, and address global challenges.
