Russia has announced a significant expansion of its sanctions list in retaliation to the European Union’s latest sanctions package, which was approved on December 16, marking the 15th round of punitive measures against the country. The new restrictions, imposed by the EU, target various sectors, including individuals and entities associated with Russia’s government, military, and economy.
The Russian Foreign Ministry responded strongly, accusing the EU of continuing its “aggressive and confrontational” policy towards Russia. The ministry criticized the EU’s reliance on unilateral sanctions, which it said are taken without the approval of the United Nations Security Council, rendering them “illegitimate under international law.”
“The EU’s actions are not only ineffective but also damaging to its own international standing,” the ministry stated. “These measures do nothing to alter Russia’s stance and only serve to undermine the EU’s reputation among the Global Majority.”
In response to the sanctions, Russia has expanded its list of EU representatives and individuals who will be banned from entering the country, invoking Federal Law No. 114-FZ of August 15, 1996, which governs the procedure for entry and exit from the Russian Federation. The new list includes high-ranking officials from law enforcement and security agencies, EU diplomats, military aid providers to Ukraine, and key figures in EU institutions who have played a role in implementing anti-Russian policies.
Additionally, the expanded sanctions target individuals involved in the legal pursuit of Russian officials, such as those advocating for the establishment of a “special tribunal” for Russian leaders or attempting to confiscate Russian state assets for the benefit of Ukraine. The list also includes parliamentarians and civil society figures who have vocally supported or contributed to measures designed to isolate Russia.
The Russian Foreign Ministry reaffirmed the country’s commitment to responding decisively to any further unfriendly actions from the EU, stressing that such steps will be met with “appropriate and timely responses.”
The European Union’s continued sanctions against Russia have been part of a broader strategy to pressure Russia over its actions in Ukraine and other geopolitical issues. However, Russia maintains that these sanctions are not only ineffective but counterproductive, arguing that they damage diplomatic relations and hinder cooperation with many countries.
As tensions between Russia and the EU persist, it remains to be seen how both sides will navigate these deepening divisions in 2025.
