Statement by the Tánaiste on the Situation in Syria

Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin issued a statement today regarding the ongoing situation in Syria, calling for peace, dialogue, and respect for international law.

“The regime of Bashar al-Assad was a brutal tyranny that maintained its grip on power through fear and repression,” Martin stated, reflecting on the long-standing authoritarian rule in Syria. He emphasized that the fall of the regime marks a critical opportunity for the Syrian people to determine their own future.

Acknowledging the volatility of the moment, Martin expressed hope for a peaceful transition of power. “My hope is that calm can be restored, and that a peaceful transition of power is possible,” he said, urging all parties to engage in inclusive dialogue as outlined under UN Security Council Resolution 2254. Martin also called on all sides to work closely with the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, in facilitating negotiations and peace efforts.

The Tánaiste further stressed the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law, particularly in protecting civilians and safeguarding the human rights of minorities. “I urge those who have taken power to respect international humanitarian law, and ensure the protection of civilians and the human rights of minorities,” he stated.

Martin also called on regional powers to use their influence constructively, stressing that all parties have a responsibility to prevent a return to violence or conflict. He underscored the immense suffering the Syrian people have endured over many decades, adding, “The people of Syria have suffered enormously and deserve a better future.”

The Irish government, according to the Tánaiste, will continue to monitor the evolving situation in Syria closely and work towards supporting efforts for peace and stability in the region.
