New Ambassadors Present Credentials to President Higgins

On 17 December 2024 two new ambassadors officially presented their Letters of Credence to President Michael D. Higgins at a ceremony at Áras an Uachtaráin, marking a significant step in strengthening diplomatic ties between Ireland and their respective countries.

His Excellency, Nicola Faganello, Ambassador of Italy, and Her Excellency, Jilan S.S. Abdalmajid, Ambassador of the State of Palestine, were formally received by the President, accompanied by their families and diplomatic teams. The ceremony was attended by a range of senior officials, including Dara Calleary, Minister for Trade Promotion, Digital Transformation, and Company Regulation, who represented the Irish government.

Ambassadors Present Credentials

Ambassador Faganello was joined by Dr. Edoardo Berionni Berna, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Italy. Meanwhile, Ambassador Abdalmajid was accompanied by her spouse, Mr. Rami Abdullmajid, their children, Sara, Mona, and Mohammed Abdulmajid, and Mr. Baker Hijazi, Deputy Head of Mission at the Palestinian Embassy.

The dignitaries were given a ceremonial welcome at Áras an Uachtaráin, which included an Escort of Honour from the 2 Brigade Cavalry Squadron of the Defence Forces. The motorcycle detachment, under the command of Lieutenant Clare Murphy, escorted the Ambassadors to and from the presidential residence, adding a formal touch to the event.

A Guard of Honour, provided by the Cadet School, Defence Forces Training Centre, was stationed at Áras an Uachtaráin for the occasion, under the command of Lieutenant Andrew Dalton. The ceremonial proceedings included the playing of music by the No. 1 Army Band, conducted by Captain Tom Kelly from Cathal Brugha Barracks in Dublin.

Diplomatic Significance

The ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter in Ireland’s relations with both Italy and Palestine. Ireland and Italy share a long history of close diplomatic ties, particularly in the areas of trade, cultural exchange, and European cooperation. Dr. Eamonn McKee, Chief of Protocol, and several senior military officers from the Defence Forces also attended the ceremony, underscoring the importance of these diplomatic occasions in maintaining Ireland’s global connections.
