In a show of solidarity and swift action, Indonesia has delivered vital humanitarian aid to Vanuatu following the devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Efate Island on December 17, 2024. The earthquake, which severely impacted Port Vila, the capital city, was followed by a series of aftershocks measuring between 4-6 magnitude, exacerbating the damage and creating an urgent need for international assistance.
On December 28, three Indonesian aircraft—two cargo planes and one passenger flight—arrived in Port Vila carrying 50 tonnes of emergency relief supplies, including essential food, water, medical equipment, and shelter materials. Alongside these supplies, 15-member emergency medical team was also dispatched to provide immediate care to those affected by the earthquake.
A Swift and Coordinated Response
The relief mission, which was part of a broader Indonesian emergency response, was overseen by Lieutenant General Dr. Suharyanto, Head of the National Disaster Management Authority of Indonesia (BNPB). The Indonesian delegation worked closely with local authorities to ensure the efficient distribution of aid to the earthquake victims.
In a formal ceremony upon the arrival of the aid, Minister of Health and Acting Deputy Prime Minister of Vanuatu, expressed deep gratitude towards Indonesia for its timely and generous support. “Indonesia has once again proven to be a true friend to Vanuatu,” the Vanuatu official said. “We are deeply thankful for your swift action and continued support during this time of crisis.”
Pre-Deployment of Relief Teams
Prior to the arrival of the humanitarian aid, a small advanced team consisting of officials from the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra and BNPB had already been deployed to Vanuatu on December 25. This team worked tirelessly to assess the situation on the ground, coordinate with local authorities, and prepare for the arrival of the larger relief operation.
The Indonesian government’s commitment to assisting Vanuatu in times of crisis underscores the strength of the Indonesia-Vanuatu relationship and Indonesia’s broader commitment to regional cooperation in times of natural disasters.
