The Indonesian Embassy in Astana recently marked three monumental events in a single celebration: New Year’s Eve 2025, the 14th Anniversary of the Embassy’s establishment, and the launch of the e-book titled “Whispers of the Steppe and Pamir: Stories of Indonesian Citizens as Ambassadors of the Nation in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.”
Held at the Embassy on December 31, the event highlighted the growing diplomatic, cultural, and economic relations between Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan. These three countries have deepened their collaboration across a broad spectrum of sectors, including economic development, tourism, education, and cultural exchange. This progress is reflected in increasing trade, frequent high-level visits, and a steady rise in tourism exchanges.
A Story of Collaboration and Diplomacy
The launch of “Whispers of the Steppe and Pamir” serves as a unique celebration of the role Indonesian citizens have played in fostering diplomatic and cultural connections in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan. The e-book is a collection of personal stories and reflections from Indonesian nationals living in both countries, offering a first-hand account of their experiences, challenges, and contributions to Indonesia’s soft power diplomacy.
In his remarks at the event, Indonesian Ambassador to Kazakhstan, [Ambassador’s Name], congratulated the contributors of the e-book for sharing their narratives and reinforcing Indonesia’s diplomatic presence in Central Asia. “This publication is not only a testament to the resilience and spirit of Indonesians abroad but also a symbol of the enduring friendship between Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan,” the Ambassador said. He also noted that this collaborative work is the first of its kind, celebrating the voices of Indonesians living in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan as key cultural ambassadors.
Strengthening Ties Between Indonesia and Central Asia
The relationship between Indonesia and Kazakhstan has grown significantly since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1994, and similarly, Indonesia-Tajikistan relations have flourished since their formalization in 1995. The e-book’s release coincides with the 79th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence, as well as the 31st and 30th anniversaries of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Kazakhstan, and Indonesia and Tajikistan, respectively. These milestones have been marked by numerous bilateral agreements, cultural exchanges, and growing people-to-people connections.
The event also highlighted the increasing number of tourists traveling between the countries. As of October 2024, a total of 15,838 visitors from Kazakhstan and Tajikistan had traveled to Indonesia, with the majority visiting popular destinations like Bali. This growing flow of tourists reflects the expanding cultural and people-to-people exchanges between the countries, further solidifying ties and mutual understanding.
A New Chapter in Indonesia-Kazakhstan-Tajikistan Relations
The launch event was attended by Indonesian citizens, members of the local Kazakhstani and Tajikistani communities, as well as diplomats and officials from the Embassy. The publication of the e-book is seen as a step toward greater collaboration in the cultural and diplomatic sectors. By amplifying the voices of Indonesians living in Central Asia, the Indonesian Embassy aims to highlight the significant contributions of citizens abroad in promoting Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy and national branding.
In his closing remarks, the Indonesian Consul General expressed gratitude for the role that Indonesians in both countries play in promoting Indonesia’s values, culture, and traditions. He also emphasized the importance of continued cooperation with Kazakhstan and Tajikistan in advancing shared goals for regional stability and prosperity.
As the Indonesian Embassy in Astana looks ahead to the next year, the launch of this e-book serves as a powerful reminder of the value of soft power diplomacy and the critical role of Indonesian citizens as cultural ambassadors in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.
