Indonesia’s Foreign Minister, Sugiono, emphasized that economic diplomacy will be a key instrument in achieving the national vision of Asta Cita. Speaking at the 2025 Foreign Ministerial Press Statement (Pernyataan Pers Tahunan Menteri/PPTM) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on January 9, Minister Sugiono highlighted Indonesia’s commitment to fostering sustainable, inclusive economic growth and enhancing the country’s global economic influence.
As the world grapples with economic uncertainty, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the World Bank project Indonesia’s economy to grow at a steady rate exceeding 5%, outperforming the global average. This resilience, according to Minister Sugiono, reflects the nation’s strong economic foundation and will serve as a crucial asset in driving domestic development while reinforcing Indonesia’s role in global economic stability and cooperation.
Economic Diplomacy for Sustainable Growth
“The goal of achieving sustainable and inclusive economic growth, leading Indonesia towards a developed nation, is not just an aspiration—it is a commitment. Economic diplomacy will play a pivotal role in realizing Asta Cita, particularly in advancing the green energy transition, strengthening the blue economy, accelerating the digital and creative industries, and supporting downstream commodity processing,” Minister Sugiono stated.
Under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia’s foreign policy will focus on fostering proactive, flexible economic transformation that upholds principles of fairness, self-reliance, and mutually beneficial partnerships. This approach aims to enhance national resilience, encourage innovation, and ensure inclusive economic growth.
Expanding Global Trade and Investment
“Indonesia’s economic diplomacy, rooted in Pancasila, will drive fairer trade practices, expand market access for Indonesian products abroad, and attract strategic investments aligned with national priorities,” Minister Sugiono added.
To strengthen Indonesia’s global economic position, the government is prioritizing deeper economic engagement with non-traditional markets, broadening international trade networks, and supporting outbound investment. Minister Sugiono highlighted Indonesia’s efforts to finalize various international trade agreements, aimed at reducing trade uncertainties and creating a stable regulatory environment for businesses, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Food Security, Energy Independence, and Global Advocacy
Beyond trade and investment, Indonesia remains committed to securing food sovereignty and energy independence through strategic global partnerships. “Our diplomatic efforts will also champion sustainability, ensuring that economic growth aligns with environmental and social responsibility,” Minister Sugiono stated.
Furthermore, the Foreign Minister underscored Indonesia’s determination to address economic inequalities, particularly those affecting developing nations and the Global South. “Unfair trade policies and economic injustices continue to hinder equitable growth. Under President Prabowo’s leadership, Indonesia will advocate for a fairer global economic system that benefits developing countries,” she asserted.
Indonesia’s Vision for a Stronger Global Presence
The Pernyataan Pers Tahunan Menteri (PPTM) serves as a key annual platform where the Foreign Minister presents Indonesia’s diplomatic priorities to both domestic and international audiences. This marks Minister Sugiono’s first PPTM since assuming office in October 2024, signaling a new phase in Indonesia’s foreign policy direction.
With economic diplomacy at the forefront, Indonesia is poised to enhance its influence on the global stage, driving sustainable development, fostering international collaboration, and ensuring the Asta Cita vision translates into tangible benefits for the nation and the world.
