Indonesia Reinforces ASEAN Unity and Pledges Stronger Role in Myanmar Crisis Resolution

Indonesia reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ASEAN unity and centrality while intensifying efforts to help resolve the ongoing political and humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. This commitment was emphasized by Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono during the Annual Foreign Minister’s Press Statement (Pernyataan Pers Tahunan Menteri/PPTM) held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on January 10.

Foreign Minister Sugiono underscored Indonesia’s strategic focus on regional stability, emphasizing that ASEAN remains a cornerstone of the country’s foreign policy under President Prabowo Subianto’s leadership. “President Prabowo has made it clear that Indonesia strives to be a good neighbor, and that commitment starts within the ASEAN region,” Minister Sugiono stated.

Indonesia’s Leadership in Strengthening ASEAN Centrality

Highlighting Indonesia’s dedication to ASEAN’s foundational principles, Minister Sugiono pointed to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) as a fundamental pillar of regional stability. “ASEAN centrality is reinforced when member states adhere to shared norms and agreements, such as the TAC. Indonesia will continue to advocate for broader recognition and respect for this treaty,” he emphasized.

Indonesia’s active diplomacy in the region was evident when President Prabowo prioritized visits to ASEAN countries immediately after his election, even before his official inauguration. “This reflects the paramount importance of ASEAN to Indonesia’s foreign policy agenda,” Minister Sugiono added.

Indonesia’s commitment to ASEAN aligns closely with Asta Cita, the nation’s strategic vision, which includes strengthening Indonesia’s global leadership and influence. Through ASEAN, Indonesia aims to play a more prominent role in shaping regional and international policies that foster peace, economic development, and political stability.

Resolving the Myanmar Crisis: A Diplomatic Imperative

A key challenge facing ASEAN is the ongoing crisis in Myanmar, which has resulted in significant political turmoil and humanitarian distress. Indonesia, as a leading ASEAN member, has taken a proactive stance in seeking a peaceful resolution.

“We remain fully committed to ASEAN-led efforts in addressing the Myanmar crisis, including the Five-Point Consensus, which serves as a crucial roadmap toward restoring stability,” Minister Sugiono stated. He reiterated Indonesia’s support for inclusive dialogue, humanitarian assistance, and diplomatic engagement to ensure that Myanmar returns to a path of peace and democracy.

Indonesia’s chairmanship of ASEAN in 2023 laid a strong foundation for sustained diplomatic efforts, and under President Prabowo’s administration, the country will continue to play a leading role in advocating for constructive engagement and conflict resolution mechanisms.

Asta Cita and Indonesia’s Vision for Regional and Global Influence

Indonesia’s approach to ASEAN diplomacy is deeply rooted in the principles of Asta Cita, a comprehensive vision that seeks to solidify the country’s leadership on the global stage. By reinforcing ASEAN unity, upholding international law, and actively participating in conflict resolution, Indonesia is positioning itself as a key player in regional and global diplomacy.

“As a major regional power, Indonesia’s influence extends beyond its borders. Strengthening ASEAN and addressing critical issues like the Myanmar crisis are part of our broader ambition to enhance Indonesia’s diplomatic standing,” Minister Sugiono emphasized.

The Pernyataan Pers Tahunan Menteri (PPTM) serves as a crucial platform for Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to outline its diplomatic strategies and commitments. This marks Minister Sugiono’s first PPTM since assuming office in October 2024, setting the tone for Indonesia’s foreign policy direction in the years ahead.

Through strong diplomatic leadership, Indonesia is poised to not only strengthen ASEAN’s cohesion but also contribute meaningfully to regional peace, economic growth, and global stability.
