India’s Minister of State for External Affairs Strengthens Ties with Malaysia in ASEAN Forum

In a recent visit to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Shri Pabitra Margherita, Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, led the Indian delegation at key ASEAN-related forums. The minister’s participation in the 15th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (EAS FMM), 32nd ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), and the 15th ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AIFMM) marked a significant moment in India-Malaysia relations.

Margherita extended India’s continued support to Malaysia’s chairmanship of ASEAN, reiterating his country’s commitment to ASEAN unity and centrality. He also acknowledged progress made in implementing the 10 Point proposal announced by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the 21st ASEAN-India Summit in Lao PDR in 2024, aimed at strengthening the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

During his remarks at the AIFMM on July 10, 2025, Margherita emphasized the need for early completion of the review of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) and highlighted development partnerships in digital, maritime, health, and innovation. He also exchanged views with fellow foreign ministers on pressing international and regional developments, including the current regional and international landscape.

In the context of regional security, Margherita expressed deep concerns over Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism, particularly following the horrific terror attack in Pahalgam, Indian Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir. He reaffirmed India’s resolute commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, commending ASEAN-led mechanisms as an important platform for candid discussions and collective efforts.

Margherita also met with the Secretary General of ASEAN and foreign ministers from Cambodia, the Philippines, and Timor Leste on the sidelines of the forums. These bilateral interactions reinforced India’s commitment to strengthening ties with its Southeast Asian partners.

The minister’s visit to Malaysia underscores the importance of the India-ASEAN relationship, particularly as the region continues to navigate complex regional dynamics.
