Indian President Meets Portuguese Leaders, Strengthens Bilateral Ties

President Droupadi Murmu met with the Prime Minister of Portugal and the President of Assembleia da Republica on her final day of visit to Lisbon.

The President's meeting with H.E. José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, President of Assembleia Da Republica, was seen as an opportunity to strengthen people-to-people ties between India and Portugal through regular exchanges between their parliaments. The two leaders agreed that there are numerous opportunities for cooperation in various areas, including trade and commerce, defence, science and technology, and energy.

During her visit to Champalimaud Foundation, the President witnessed research and development initiatives in neuroscience, oncology, experimental clinical research, and automated medicine delivery. She also interacted with Indian researchers and scholars working at the foundation and other institutions across Portugal, commending their role in deepening India-Portugal collaboration in emerging technologies and scientific research.

The Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown is a state-of-the-art medical, scientific and technological institution developing interdisciplinary clinical care alongside applied research activities and advanced education programmes. The President paid floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi in Lisbon before visiting the Radha-Krishna Temple to offer her prayers.

In a Reception hosted by the Ambassador of India to Portugal, the President addressed the members of the Indian community, highlighting their contributions to Portugal and their efforts to promote Indian culture. The President expressed gratitude towards the Government and people of Portugal for welcoming the Indian diaspora and ensuring their safety and well-being.

The President assured that the Government of India is committed to strengthening its bond with the diaspora and ensuring their welfare, citing initiatives taken by the government in times of crisis. She urged members of the Indian diaspora to feel connected to their motherland, regardless of where they are in the world.

Following the reception, the President departed for the Slovak Republic on April 8, 2025, marking the conclusion of her visit to Portugal.
